An English Visit

Friends came to visit from England last week and we literally laughed the entire time. It was the perfect vacation of driving around New England during the Fall. There was an added bonus of a snowstorm before Halloween and people say there is no such thing as global warming. I'm skeptical. A 4 1/2 hour drive turned into a 9 1/2 hour drive - adventure to say the least. I couldn't have asked for a better time and what a way to kick off November, eh?! Good food, drinks, musical playlists(will add later), laughs and most important the company. You know it's a good visit when you're left teary eyed at the airport - I miss them already.

I watched this documentary, 180 SOUTH last night and it was one of the most inspiring stories I have seen in a long time. Everyone must see this film especially if you like to climb, surf and travel - if not it is still a story that will possibly get you to stop dreaming and start doing.

I've decided to boycott reading Travel & Leisure Magazine - five pages in and I'm always SO mad! I just want to go everywhere. The other day I saw an entire spread on Normandy and their oysters - come on! I need to find out a way to become rich so I can read Travel & Leisure Mag and say, "oh yeah, when I went there I ate that too. It was marvelous". One day.

Noah & The Whale's sophomore album First Days of Spring definitely has a different ring to the ears this time around. It's amazing how music, people, films, art, ect. can affect you in different ways if you allow enough time to pass. Great concept album nonetheless.

I have been involved in so many of my own projects lately I can't seem to focus on just one. This has by far been my most creative year. Currently, I am writing two films and Max Richter has been my go to inspirational writing music.

I am sad to say I am just reading this poem for the first time. Maybe it was one of those poems we had to read in high school, but I was probably more interested in passing notes. The movie Eat, Pray, Love was not nearly as good as the book(usually the case), but there is one scene that I absolutely love. It is when main character, Elizabeth cooks Thanksgiving dinner for all her friends in Italy. In the beginning of this clip she expresses what she is thankful for and not only do I share the same sentiment, but it's a beautiful scene. I can't wait to make another Thanksgiving or rather a fake Thanksgiving dinner for my friends visiting from London this Summer. It's never to early to celebrate a holiday that gives thanks and allows you to eat as much as you want for a day.

I know this is an oldie and certainly has been around the wedding song block a million times and back again, but I still love it! This song brings me back to a hot summer night in Spain laying on a lounge chair at sunset, sharing headphones and listening to this tune. I remember feeling that same way, that "this is the first day of my life". I love how you can always associate songs with certain times in your life.

A few things I have found to help start a successful creative day -
coffee (a must)
sunlight(if available)
music
read and reread your favorite quotes from literature.

I am not saying you wont hit a block during the day, but just take a walk, come back and start again. Maybe with tea instead.

I also find myself thinking about this perfect day every time I sit down to create. It was from a time I spent in New York City with a best friend meandering around, drinking coffee, talking about our work and what our hopes were for the future. The weather was perfect and so was his disposition. At the end of the day we had the opportunity to see the famous American play Our Town. There is so much about this play that I could go on about it, but I will leave you with a quote that has stayed with me and has helped me conquer a day of creating.

I am making a film about miscommunication in the modern world, which tends to happen in relationships, friendships, ect. This idea can be as broad as you want - please interpret it however you see fit. I am hoping that you can dig deep and tell me a personal story that has stuck with you about a miscommunication that has affected your life either for better or for worse. The only thing I ask is it that these stories are yours and they are truthful (all stories that you share will be confidential).

You can either send me a facebook message and or email me at cateschappert@gmail.com. These stories can be humorous, sad, funny, ect. - I don't want to put too many parameters on this as I want this idea to be as free as possible.

I know that I am asking a lot of you to take time out of your day, but the more people that share, the more data I collect, the more information I have to work with. If I use these stories in the film I will contact you at a later date, but for now lets get to it.

Also, please feel free to share this post with anyone that is willing to share and also wants to be part of something great. Please include your general contact info at the bottom with each story. It's starting to feel like Spring and I'm already thinking about Summer - I have such a creative season approaching. I'm just so excited for the amazing light that summer always brings. There is so much traveling, photographing, filmmaking, writing and loved ones exchanging their vows - I can't wait to not have to wear a coat for a few months, put on a party dress and carry around my camera. :-)

I realized today I started this journal/blog (call it whatever you want) just about a year and three months ago when I embarked on a very special and life altering move to London - my goodness how time flies. It honestly feels like yesterday that I moved my entire life across the world and back again. I started thinking about this past year or so when I stumbled upon this photo deep in my archives and was reminded that although life takes unexpected turns with many ups and downs that people and emotions always do have a way of finding their place in the world - well at least for now. I am loving the work from Russian Photographer, Bez Uma. According to Dazed Digital magazine he only picked up a camera a year ago... self taught little wonder - love it! Great interview here - I love what he says about his process and reasoning for photographing, "I used to think that inside my head was a good enough place to keep precious memories, but unfortunately you can't always fully rely on memory. I decided to start shooting to collect all the images I want to recall later." The pictures you see below are from a series shot on his cell phone and again I just love his approach to creating these humorous everyday moments. He says, "I’ve tried to convey that equipment really doesn't matter, but your eyes do. The purpose of this series was to capture the cinematic moments in real life using a simple camera phone that's always in your pocket and allows you to take images at any time." Folks, you really can just use your cell phone to make captivating images - there are no excuses to not get out there and make things.

I'm getting so lazy about posting lately - so sorry, but let's talk about those Oscars! My goodness was it a great year in film or what. I just love awards shows - it gives me such pleasure to watch people getting recognized and rewarded for their hard work and talent. And the speeches, oh lordy those speeches... they get me every time - a knot in the throat, watery eyes and then the embarrassed laugh quickly comes over me. Every award season I have to stock up on an extra box of tissues. Oh man, is it bad.

The speeches that made me cry - Christain Bale, Colin Firth, Tom Hooper, David Seidler, Natalie Portman and Luke Matheny.

Where shall I move my suitcase of rocks now? I have been trying to make a decision about where to move and I am completely stuck. I officially can not make up my mind. This is one of the most frustrating times in my life - I have tried to make lists and still no conclusions. LA, Paris and London are all on the table, but they all have their drawbacks. Can someone just make the decision for me? That would be nice. If anyone wants to chime in here and vote BE MY GUEST! Maybe I should just move to Fiji...

A Waltz For A Night

Before Sunset the sequel to Before Sunrise, both equally brilliant is one of my favorite films of all time. Actress, Julie Delpy is not only an actress/screen-writer/director, but also a singer songwriter - this chick can do it all. Here is a clip from Before Sunset, which also happens to be one of my favorite scenes ever in a movie. It is such a sweet song. Love.

This film was just in my inbox and it's simply too beautiful not to share. My lovely big brother, a surfer himself knows how much I love surf culture and that at any free moment I am out there photographing the beaches and oceans of world that he had to share this film with me. So... I'm paying it forward. The genius/creative behind it all is Irish surf photographer, Mickey Smith. The imagery, words and music are absolutely stunning. Enjoy!

Most folk don’t even know who we are, and what we do or how we do it, let alone what they pay us for it. I never want to take this for granted so I try to keep motivation simple, real, and positive… If I only scrape a living, at least it’s a living where I’m scraping…. If there’s no future in it, this is a present worth remembering.
I see life in angles, in lines of perspective – the slow turn of a head, the blink of an eye, subtle glimpses of magic – other folk might pass by. Cameras help me translate, interpret and understand what I see. It’s a simple act that keeps me grinnin’. I never set out to become anything in particular, only to live creatively and push the scope of my experience for adventure and for passion. They still all mean something to me, same as most anyone with dreams. My heart bleeds celtic blood and I magnetize the familiar frontiers. The raw brutal cold coastlands for the right waveriders to challenge – this is where my heart beats hardest.
I try to pay tribute to that magic through photographs. Weathering the endless staunch for rare glimpses of magic each winter is both a blessing and a curse I relish. I wanna see waveriding documented the way I see it in my head, and the way I feel it in the sea. This is a strange set of skills to begin to acquire. This is only achievable through time spent riding waves. All sorts of waves on all sorts of crafts. There is more time spent learning out on the water, floating in the sea amongst lumps and swells, you always learn something. It’s been a lifelong wise old classroom teacher of sorts and hopefully, it always will be. Buried beneath headlands, shaping the coast, mind-blowing images of empty waves burn away at me.

Solid ocean swells powering through deep cold water, heavy waves weighs in wait, coaxed from comfortable routine, ignite the imagination, conveys some of the viny spark, whisper possibilities, conjure the situations I thrive amongst and love to document.

We all take knocks in the process – broken backs, drownings, near-drownings, hypothermia, dislocations, fractures, frostbite, head wounds, stitches, concussions, broke my arm – and that’s just the last couple of years, still look forward to getting amongst it each winter though.

Cold creeping into your core, driving you mad, day after day, mumbling to yourself while you hold position and wait for the next set to come. The dark side of the lens – An artform that to itself and us, silent workhorses of the surfing wake. There’s no sugary cliché. Most folk don’t even know who we are, and what we do or how we do it, let alone what they pay us for it. I never want to take this for granted so I try to keep motivation simple, real, and positive.

TGIF. Oysters and bring your own wine night is in the near future - I can't wait.

I watched a few really good films this week - they were all worth the escape. First was the French romantic comedy, Heartbreaker. Second was Soul Kitchen a witty German film with a tinge of romance. The third one was the Italian romance drama, I Am Love - if nothing else, it's beautiful to watch. Yay for foreign film week!

I have been watching and reading interviews about this film for months and I finally got to see it this weekend - I can honestly say that it was brilliant and very sad so be sure to bring your tissues. I had high hopes for this story after watching all those interviews and directer and writer Derek Cianfrance really delivered a raw and honest story. Actors, Ryan Gosling and Michele Williams who play Dean and Cindy, the couple that this romance story is based on brought so much to the story - this is more than your average romance film it's more what happens when the romance dies and why does the romance die? They have great chemistry with one another - not sure other actors could've done a better job. All and all great film - well done to all involved! You can see an interview with Derek - so humble, love it. Go see it and lets hope for some Oscars.

Music in the film was done by one of my favorite bands Grizzly Bear.

I want one! This lovely yellow, collapsible teak chair was designed by Gregory Buntain, graduate of the industrial design program at Pratt University. He also works as the creative director for the store, TENET - which is an awesome store. TENET is located on Main Street in Southampton, NY and slightly resembling the Brooklyn store Smith & Butler - in a good way. Be sure to check out more of Gregory's designs - he's got some really good stuff on here.

Did I mention that I'm learning how to box again - it's been two years since I last took boxing lessons and let me tell you it's not pretty. I am sore in places where I didn't even think I had muscles. I'll let you know how I progress - should be interesting.

Here are my prints all wrapped up and sent off to Amigos Publishing in Providence for their upcoming group show and release party, Learn How to Have fun with Machines With Magnets. I just love using craft paper and packaging things up so much that I had to photograph it and share with you all. Also if you are in the Pawtucket, RI area you should pop on by for some art and good ol' fun. Or if you aren't in the area and still want to come you should do that too! All Fun Stuff

I am home from London and of course a bit sad about it, but it was nice to be welcomed by the beautiful wintery wonderland of New York. It's too bad that it will soon be a bunch of ugly gray slush. Holidays are always way too short - I guess it's back to the grind then. A lot of photo editing to catch up on and thank goodness I am accompanied by the fantastic double disc-er 'The Very Best of Aretha Franklin' which was gifted to me by one of my favorite, most creative girlfriends, Miriam Lessar. I could hang with this chicky for hours it's one of the great joys of visiting London.

If you are in London I highly suggest going to Tennis's single launch party presented by the fabulous, Young & Lost Club on Tuesday, January 18th - I'm so bummed I will miss it.

Why yes Refinery 29 how did you know I was in search for new headphones. Thanks for reminding me that the streetwear company, WeSC has got some great ones. The New Year

Happy New Year everyone and a very Happy Birthday to my brother-in-law, Doug. I finally got to Vermont after the east coast blizzard that had me locked up for two days and had a lovely New Years Eve holiday. I stuffed my face with amazing food from The Parker House Inn , went sledding all day and even into the night, ate homemade pizza from an 11 year old that was to die for, had a fantastic massage at the Strong House Spa (I highly suggest going), had drinks with old friends from Boston and brought in the New Year with, one of my favorite people, Ben, family and a bottle of Veuve Clicquot. Oh did I forget to mention my insane hang over that decided to pay me a visit...thank goodness for the girls and their ability to find me a cheeseburger and fries - so after a windy and almost sick journey to Hanover, NH I ate the plate of grease and maybe, just maybe did I feel slightly better. What else is New Years for than to greet you with the worlds worst hangover.

I then headed off to London to bring in yet another new year in what feels like my second home. Also, New Years resolutions... do people still make those? Mine, well, I never stick to them anyway so why go through the disappointment. Happy New Year everyone!

Christmukkah or shall I say festivus has come to an end, but thank goodness we still have the New Year to celebrate. I just love this time of year, but the day after Christmas always feels so sad to me - it's always a bummer to see the holidays come to an end so I am happy to still have the new year to celebrate. My holiday plans have changed countless times due to airport delays, cancelations and blizzards. I guess I can't be too upset, I mean it is Winter, right? So things are a little postponed, but it's better this way. I now get to celebrate Christmukkah post real Christmukkah. So I say bring it on!
